Oliu Reading-"Preparing an Effective Resume"
Oliu Reading
Oliu keys readers into the finer points of how to get a job through this textbook chapter on Resume writing and formatting. They begin by going over how you as a writer should review your employment and education background, what experiences have enriched and encouraged the development of skills in the job market you intend to field out resumes to. Then they establish the recommended content formatting for the document, where to place education background vs. employment experience and skills, etc. As they go through the placement of content, they go over which content should go where and if one should even include some content within a resume. For example, specific desired job title or tagline in your heading should only be included if your resume is tailored towards gaining that specific position; whereas with a resume written for the broader field you wish to work in, a tagline or the desired job is not necessary. Ethical resume writing tips are also included, such as no-brainers like "don't include false information or blatant lies in your resume", and less offensive issues such as whether to include a salary requirement within your resume. The crux of this whole essay is to write your resume ethically, efficiently, and format it in such a way that your employer is able to read over it easily.
The section on the experience section is especially enlightening for me, as my desired job fields have little or nothing to do with the jobs I have had in the past. This list of things I could potentially fill in to a resume broadens my own and the reader's perspective on what is "desirable" or deemed "experience" when it comes to the job market.
Say someone has little-to-no experience in their desired job field but they had plenty of extracurriculars and developmental experiences while in school, how would you format those experiences within your resume?
